It’s a little rush when you get that ‘new follower’ notification, isn’t it? There’s a certain validation that getting tons of likes and comments on mundane photos on Instagram gives. It makes the routine feel luxurious.
Beyond how popularity on Instagram feels, being popular on Instagram has palpable benefits. Those fancy trips around the world, expensive brand-name items, and celebrity friendships don’t come from thin air. They’re some of the perks that being a celebrity on Instagram comes with.
So, you’ve decided you want that life. Now, how are you going to get it? Instagram fame is up for grabs for anybody who is willing to put in the work. Will you take your Insta-game from tame to fame?
Here are some tips on what you need to do:
1. What makes you special?
Instagram popularity doesn’t happen by being generic. If you’re not a gorgeous model with a perfect figure and a knack for hashtagging and photo editing, it might take a bit more of that “something” that people want to see. Start with your talents and passions. What do you have an interest or skill in that sets you apart from the general public? Remember: Nerds are “in” right now. If you have no skills but your personality, you have to find ways to make that personality shine.
2. Give yourself a hashtag.
Why not? This might seem silly now, but when you become an Instagram celeb, it’ll make more sense. It’s self-branding. When people see it, they’re going to think, “oh, this person must be important”. You can use your name, your handle, or reference your skills/hobbies. Just make sure it’s unique to you.
3. Make a killer bio.
What do you say here? Say something that grabs attention and helps your visitors feign an interest in you. It should be descriptive enough to let them know what you’re all about, but simple enough that it’s catchy. Put your hashtag in here, too.
4. Who’s the Pepsi to your Coke?
Let’s face it: you’re not unique. You can smith your own reproductions of Game of Thrones weaponry and armor and wax stamp your shipments with a signet, but you still won’t be the only one who does it. No matter how niche you think you are, there’s someone out there already doing what you do. Make that work for you. Find those people and befriend them. Collaborations will help both of you gain fans, while competition will divide the fans. Which sounds better? More fans, or half the fans? Hm.
5. Hashtag everything.
Use a lot of hashtags, even if they’re only vaguely relevant. The recommended number of hashtags is 11 per post, that’s the number that gets you the maximum amount of engagement. You can use all 30 if you want to but try to get a variety in there so you reach different groups of people. Oh! And save your time. Skip the super generic hashtags.
To make sure a hashtag is worthwhile, check back on them after a few hours. The hashtag pages will have a “Top Posts” section for the most popular posts at the moment. If your post never makes it there, you need to use more niche hashtags. For example, #lifting is a huge hashtag with millions of posts, but #girlswholift has a smaller audience. Getting featured in “top posts” is a fast track to an influx of followers.
6. Be consistent.
This works on a few different fronts. First, your posts should all be within relatively the same theme. Keep to the same filters, style, and/or colors. People love patterns, so seeing the same aesthetic in photos again and again will keep their attention. Consistency also matters when it comes to regular posting and the time that you post. Find the volume of posts and time of posting that works best for you and stick to it every day. There are apps that you can use to schedule Instagram posts to help keep you consistent.
7. Engage with others.
Your focus should include both Instagram and “real life”. Your local community is an asset. Tag where you visit, drop them a nice one-line review in your post, and interact with their content. You also need to do the same with other users. If you get new followers, especially active ones, it helps create a connection to give them some likes and comments every now and then. Doing this also helps get people to follow you. Browse hashtags that are relevant to what you determined makes you “unique” (like #smithing, #gameofthrones, #waxsealing, etc.), and engage with the people who post in those hashtags. They’re definitely likely candidates for your audience!
Of course, these tips just scratch the surface. There are dozens of ways to gain valuable attention from Instagram users that weren’t covered here, like shout-outs and features, but employing these 7 tips is a great basis for gaining a following. With these tips, you can create a nice foundation and make yourself an account that people actually want to follow. It grows and grows from there!
